FAQs

What substrates can be used "under the Dome"?

Pressure sensitive materials normally. Within this range the most widely used material is metalized polyester (mylar) which can be embossed to provide the best Domed effect (when Doming is desired embossing is strongly recommended to realize maximum graphic appeal). Vinyl, some paper, pressure-sensitives, polycarbonates, aluminum, acrylics and others can also be Domed. Unsupported, or non pressure-sensitive materials have also been domed such as polycarbonate, magnetic and injection molded plastics.

Can you Dome materials other than pressure sensitive?

Yes Some examples considered to date have been Doming metal stampings for wheel centres, wheel covers, steering wheel centres, even Doming the heads of pins which hold the hinge to the frame of eye glasses!

Do you Dome only products that Craft manufactures?

No. We can Dome customer supplied parts as well, but each has to be studied to ensure the product meets specific criteria.

What is the maximum Dome size?

100 sq. inches (645 cm). Requirements beyond these parameters would have to be studied.

What is the minimum Dome size?

Domes® can be produced as small as 1/8" diameter under optimum conditions. Again, it would be necessary to consider your specific need.

How thick is the plastic Dome "cap"?

The normal height is .080" ± .010" (In addition to the thickness of the substrate).

Can you vary the height of the Dome?

No. The exceptions are that the smaller the Dome the SLIGHTLY higher the Dome can become, and smaller Domes also appear higher. An area of plain chrome under the Dome also makes a Dome appear higher.

What shapes can or cannot be Domed?

"Virtually" any shape can be Domed. The more complex the shape, the more time and care is required. There are occasions when artwork may require modification to accomodate the doming process.

Can you make individual Dome letters?

Yes! Individual letters to form a word (C R A F T) or "script" letters can be made. When you order individual letters, they will be supplied so the entire word is applied as one piece in their correct alignment. Letters must be a minimum of ¼ inch wide and their exact shape must first be checked by Craft for suitability to Doming.

What is the outdoor life?

We have Dome chemical systems, which offer varying alternatives of exterior life and price range. Your required outdoor life should be specified at time of quotation. Craft's exterior grade Dome surpasses 1500 hours in Q.U.V. tests. Actual outdoor life will vary dependant on use and geographical location.

Can Domes be applied to curved surfaces?

Depending on the degree of curve, size and shape of Dome, type of adhesive and surface, it may well be possible to have Craft design and test to meet this need.
